The Good Life: A Dog’s Guide to Charleston, SC

Beaches, patios, parks, and plenty of reasons to believe your dog has a better social life than you do.

Let’s be honest: dogs living in Charleston, South Carolina, have it pretty good.

They have sandy beaches to explore, shady streets to sniff, dog-friendly patios to supervise, parks for zoomies, and approximately 8,000 opportunities per day to convince a stranger they’re adorable.

If you’re looking for dog-friendly things to do in Charleston, here’s a local pup’s guide to living the Lowcountry good life.

HIT THE BEACH

A Charleston dog needs a beach day. It’s practically a requirement.

Some favorite spots include:

• Folly Beach
• Isle of Palms
• Sullivan’s Island
• Edisto Beach
• Kiawah Island
  

Just remember that beach access, leash requirements, and seasonal restrictions vary, so double check current rules before you go. Here’s a quick cheat sheet for my favorite spots:

Photographer’s tip: Early morning and sunset are not only beautiful—they’re much kinder to your dog’s paws during Charleston’s warmer months (May – September).

And if the surf and sand isn’t yours or your dog’s thing, here are some other options to still keep water play in your day:

• Wag – N – Splash – indoor private dog swim facility
• Swimply – rent a dog friendly swimming pool
• Dog Day Afternoon – annual end of summer event at Splash Island (Mt. Pleasant), Splash Zone (James Island), and Whirlin’ Waters (North Charleston) waterparks

FIND A PARK

When your dog has more energy than your household can reasonably handle, take in the sniffs, trails, and views at these local spots:

• James Island County Park
• Hampton Park
• Magnolia Plantation
• White Point Garden
• Old Towne Creek Country Park
• Waterfront Park
• Riverfront Park
• Daniel Island Trail

And I would be amiss not to include our favorite (and the best) dog park, The Broken Leash which is the premier dog park AND bar in the area (pictured below). They offer the only dog behavior trained, supervised, dog park experience and have tons of fun events and opportunities to build community for yourself and your pup. Unlike other parks, registration is required with full vaccine proof to ensure safety of all park pups.

Whether your pup wants to run, sniff, socialize, or simply supervise your walk, there’s a Charleston park for that.

GRAB A BITE

Charleston’s patio culture makes it wonderfully easy to bring your best friend along.

Dog-friendly favorites to check out include:

• Red’s Icehouse – Mt. Pleasant
• Charleston Sports Pub – all locations
• Taco Boy – Downtown
• Poogan’s Porch – Downtown
• Blind Tiger Pub – Downtown
• Page’s Okra Grill – Mt. Pleasant
• Bodega – Mt. Pleasant
• Lost Dog Cafe – Folly Beach
• Park and Grove – Downtown
• Saltwater Cowboys – Mt. Pleasant
• East Bay Deli – all locations
• Poe’s Tavern – Sullivan’s Island
• Santi’s – Downtown
• Island Cabana Bar – Downtown
• Edmund’s Oast Brewery – Downtown
• Ellis Creek Fish Camp – James Island

Always check with the restaurant first, since individual dog policies can change and not all patios allow pets.

GO SHOPPING

Because obviously your dog needs new toys and the latest fashion accessories.

GET PAMPERED

Charleston humidity and heat is “ruff” on everyone—including the fluffy ones.

For the particularly muddy dog, a self-service wash may be less expensive than explaining to your groomer what happened in the marsh.

NEED A SLEEPOVER?

Sometimes your dog can’t come along, and that’s okay.

Charleston-area options for boarding and daycare include:

• Island Pawplex Pet Retreat

Tour facilities ahead of time and ask about play groups, overnight accommodations, supervision, and emergency procedures.
Also consider ROVER! They’re a great option for trusted sitters and dog walkers.
